Threes Brewing
By some estimates, at the turn of the 20th century, 30% of beer consumed in The United States was brewed in Brooklyn; 48 breweries operated in the borough.
While Brooklyn was home to at least two colonial breweries, it wasn’t until an influx of German immigrants arrived in the 1840s that the brewery scene exploded. By the time Prohibition was enacted in 1920, 23 breweries still called Brooklyn home–but when Prohibition was repealed, only nine managed to reopen.
In 1976, the last brewery in Brooklyn closed, citing high labor and material costs as well as an inability to compete with national macro-breweries. For 20 years, Brooklyn remained without a brewery, until Brooklyn Brewery opened in Williamsburg in 1996. Now, Brooklyn has nearly 30 breweries–the most since before Prohibition–including Threes Brewing, based at 333 Douglass St. in Gowanus.
