Washington Park Stadium Wall
3rd Ave + 1st St in 1908
Now owned by Con Edison, this 20-foot-high wall is somewhat of a controversial topic among baseball historians. Some say it dates back to the Brooklyn Dodgers’ first home field at Washington Park, where they played from 1898-1912, before moving to Ebbett’s Field in Flatbush. Constructed in 1898, Washington Park stadium sat 18,000 attendees.
Other historians say that this wall was constructed in 1914 as part of a renovation ahead of the inaugural season of the short lived Tip-Tops team. The stadium, apart from this wall, was dismantled in 1922.
No matter who played here, it’s undeniably one of the oldest relics of early American baseball in the United States. While the Landmarks Preservation Commission denied landmark status to the wall, Con Edison chose to preserve it, noting that it’s “the last link to 20th Century pro baseball in Brooklyn.”
