Ms. Mack and Granny Flo’s Garden
Ms. Mack and Granny Flo, two community leaders and pillars, take care of this large corner plot on 244 Bond Street. This garden was first created by Mr. Long and Ms. Baker, and has existed for over 25 years. Ms. Mack and Granny Flo use this garden as a gathering place for all, especially the building’s seniors. Residents have made the plot their own, planting both native flora and flora culturally important to them, displaying their love of local biodiversity and gardening.
Gowanus Green Team, a paid youth workforce development program through Gowanus Canal Conservancy, supports Ms. Mack and Granny Flo’s garden through planting, composting, and overall maintenance of the space, providing entry-level workforce experience to local youth impacted by environmental justice issues.
