ByClio Bakery
400 3rd Ave in the 1940s
Built in 1929, 400 3rd Avenue was originally owned by Burns Brothers Coal Pockets. From 1915-1938, the company had 18 coal pockets along the Gowanus Canal, each 40 to 50 feet tall. Coal pockets were used to store coal and load it from barges into trucks and wagons; coal was one of the most-shipped goods on the canal. Most of the coal that Burns Brothers processed was used in Brooklyn businesses–for heating, cooking and, later, generating electricity.
This space is now home to ByClio Bakery.
